Q: Should I hire a CDFA instead of an attorney? A: NO! Any person getting a divorce should seek legal counsel. The role of the CDFA is to work with attorneys and/or other divorce professionals, not replace them.Q: Do you help only women or only men? A: No. We advocate for women or men. The CDFA analyzes and interprets the financial situation and helps the other professionals reach a settlement in the client's best interest.Q: Do you ever act as a neutral party to help a divorcing couple reach an equitable settlement? A: Yes. Of course, we are NOT attorneys and do not give legal advice. However, we do work with mediators and collaborative divorce teams to facilitate an equitable settlement for a divorcing couple.Q: Isn't an equitable settlement always a 50/50 division of property? A: No, not necessarily. Depending on the circumstances, something other than a 50/50 split might prove to be the "fair and equitable" division of property.Q: Why have I never heard of a CDFA before? A: The CDFA is a somewhat new addition to the divorce team. Although we have been around for several years, we are just now becoming familiar to the public. There are currently fewer than 1,500 CDFAs in the country but our number is growing and soon many financial professionals will choose to take the courses and exams necessary to meet the educational requirements and become certified. There is certainly a growing need for our services and many individuals and professionals have found us to be an invaluable addition to the divorce team. |
